What is in this deck

With this deck you learn French team communication in emergency medical work: structured handover, tasking and read-back, the ten-for-ten pause and the debrief.

French crews carry their own set of letters, and translating the English ones back does not get you understood.

The structured handover is SAED: Situation, Antécédents, Évaluation, Demande. The account of a condition is the bilan, the control room is the régulation médicale, and the doctor who leads the medical side of a larger job is the DSM. On the radio you meet alternat, parlez and terminé, and the deck says which of them the French lists actually carry.

Looking back afterwards has two names, débriefing à chaud and débriefing à froid; the cards say what separates them and where the RETEX belongs.

The deck stays with the language of the team. Decisions about a patient are not its subject and never will be.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Handover and situation report” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

You learn French. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.

What you learn

  • Bilan and préavis before you arrive
  • Régulation médicale and DSM: who leads what
  • Alternat, parlez, terminé: the radio in France
  • Débriefing à chaud and à froid

  2. Schemas and assessment

  4. Roles in the team

What you get

Here are three of the 136 cards you get when you buy the deck.

With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.

  1. Question

    the handover at hospital

    Answer

    la transmission à l'hôpital

    Note

[la tʁɑ̃smisjɔ̃] · it is the point where most details get lost; that is why it has a fixed form · Word field: la transmission (handing on), l'équipe d'accueil (the place that takes over)

  2. Question

    the pre-alert by radio

    Answer

    le préavis par radio

    Note

[lə pʁeavi] · it comes before the handover and is shorter; it says who is coming and when · Word field: le préavis (the word ahead), l'arrivée (arriving)

  3. Question

    “We are ten minutes out.”

    Answer

« Nous arrivons dans dix minutes. »

    Note

[nuz‿aʁivɔ̃] · a time the receiving team can plan with; “bientôt” is not one · Word field: l'heure d'arrivée (the time of arrival expected), la planification (planning ahead)

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 136 checked cards for €1.29, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.
