If you spend the whole evening working through your material, it feels like diligence. Two weeks later most of it is gone again. The flaw in that thinking: what counts is not the amount you study. It is the spacing between your sessions … and that spacing can be planned. Qardbox takes over that planning for you with a highly efficient algorithm.

If you read the same card five times in a row, you know it the fifth time. That is because it is now sitting fresh in your short-term memory: a great sense of achievement.
But you never really had to retrieve it, and by the next morning there is little left of either the memory or the high.
The perfect window
Qardbox shows you your card exactly in the window where you could just about still know it, but have not completely forgotten it yet. As with building muscle, what matters is training in precisely that strenuous moment, or here: studying. The window is individual for every single card and gets more precise with every session.
The principles behind this are called the spacing effect, the testing effect and desirable difficulties. They have been studied for over a hundred years, and Qardbox invents nothing new about them. It only makes sure they work in your daily routine without any planning on your part. Where this comes from.

Qardbox estimates for every single one of your cards how long you will keep it in your head, and puts your next repetition right into the window just before that. You have nothing to set and nothing to work out.
Behind it sits FSRS-6, an openly published method into which every single rating you give is fed. So your plan shifts along continuously and always stays at the level of your last round. Cards that sit firmly with you come back only in weeks, and cards you get stuck on come back tomorrow.
Once you bring enough history, Qardbox recomputes the weights on your device and adopts your own only if they end up fitting you better than the tested defaults. The first of these milestones is at 512 ratings on separate days, and the following ones double from there. How it calculates.

Known or not known?
You read the front and swipe right if you knew it, and left if you did not. You can reveal the answer while doing so, but you do not have to.
Whether you turn a card over once more before you swipe, to see the answer, does not decide how well you learn. Only you can judge whether you were really just checking or whether you peeked: the more honestly your swipe marks a card as known or not known, the better your results.
