What is in this deck

With this deck you learn French at level B1: 192 cards with full sentences, plus pronunciation, a note on the form and two words from the same context.

B1 is the level where you stop translating and start speaking. That does not call for harder words but for different ones: the kind you use to back up an opinion, tell a story, and wrap an objection politely.

Roughly 190 cards built on set phrases rather than single words: “je trouve que”, “ça vaut la peine”, “il paraît que”. Every note gives pronunciation, gender and government: which preposition follows the verb is the most common mistake at this level.

Eight topic areas from housing to the environment. And, where it matters, a word on register: when something sounds colloquial and when to leave it alone.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Everyday life & home” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

You learn French. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.

What you learn

  • Around 190 expressions for opinion and narration
  • Pronunciation, gender and government in each note
  • Eight word fields from home to environment
  • Set phrases instead of single words
  • Register: when colloquial French fits

  2. Work & education
  3. Travel & transport
  4. Food & shopping

What you get

Here are three of the 192 cards you get when you buy the deck.

With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.

  1. Question

Next month we are going to move into a bigger flat.

    Answer

Le mois prochain, nous allons déménager dans un appartement plus grand.

    Note

[de.me.na.ʒe] · takes avoir · Word set: déménager (to move house), le déménagement (the move), emménager (to move in) · Pitfall: déménager = move out, emménager = move in

  2. Question

It is necessary that you make a spare key before you leave.

    Answer

Il faut que tu fasses un double des clés avant de partir.

    Note

[fas] · present subjunctive of faire · Trigger: il faut que always takes the subjunctive · Word set: faire un double (to make a spare key), la clé (the key) · Pitfall: never the indicative after il faut que, so never il faut que tu fais

  3. Question

She lives in an old building with six floors.

    Answer

Elle habite dans un vieil immeuble de six étages.

    Note

[i.mœbl] · m · Word set: l'immeuble (the apartment block), le bâtiment (the building), l'étage (the floor) · Pitfall: immeuble almost always means a multi-storey residential block

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 192 checked cards for €1.49, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.
