What is in this deck

With this deck you learn German team communication in emergency medical work: structured handover, tasking and read-back, the ten-for-ten pause and the debrief.

A handover rarely goes wrong because somebody knows too little. It goes wrong because three people speak at once and nobody has the order.

This deck brings the German terms a crew works with: the Voranmeldung sent ahead to the hospital, the Rufname that identifies a vehicle on the service radio, the Leitstelle that sends it and keeps the picture, and the handover schemes SINNHAFT and ISBAR as German emergency departments have agreed them.

Each card names the term and not the occasion: what a scheme asks for is here, when it is used is not. The back holds the pronunciation, a note on the abbreviation and two expressions from the same field.

Terms are the subject. Anything done for a patient belongs to your training and your protocols, not to a card.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Handover and situation report” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

You learn German. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.

What you learn

  • SINNHAFT and ISBAR for the German handover
  • Voranmeldung: the word ahead to the hospital
  • Rufname and Leitstelle on the service radio
  • Anordnung and Rückmeldung inside the crew
  • Nachbesprechung once the callout is over

The categories

8 categories sort the 136 cards. You can filter by category and take on what is due right now.

  1. Handover and situation report
  2. Schemas and assessment
  3. Command and mission
  4. Roles in the team
  5. Safeguards against error
  6. Situational awareness
  7. Radio discipline
  8. Debriefing

What you get

Here are three of the 136 cards you get when you buy the deck.

With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.

  1. Question

    the handover at hospital

    Answer

    die Übergabe im Krankenhaus

    Note

[ˈkʁaŋkn̩ˌhaʊ̯s] · it is the point where most details get lost; that is why it has a fixed form · Word field: die Übergabe (handing on), die Aufnahme (the place that takes over)

  2. Question

    the pre-alert by radio

    Answer

    die Voranmeldung über Funk

    Note

[ˈfoːɐ̯ˌʔanmɛldʊŋ] · it comes before the handover and is shorter; it says who is coming and when · Word field: die Anmeldung (announcing in advance), die Ankunft (arriving)

  3. Question

    “We are ten minutes out.”

    Answer

„Wir sind in zehn Minuten bei euch.“

    Note

[tseːn miˈnuːtn̩] · a time the receiving team can plan with; “gleich” is not one · Word field: die Zeitangabe (the statement of the time), die Planung (planning ahead)

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 136 checked cards for €1.29, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.

Do I need a connection to study?

Only to download the deck. After that it lives on your device and you study offline. There is no account, and you sign in nowhere.
