What is in this deck

With this deck you learn German at level A2: 165 cards with full sentences, plus pronunciation, a note on the form and two words from the same context.

At A2 the first day is behind you. Now come the sentences that carry a week: what you did yesterday, what you have to do tomorrow, why you cannot come and what you would rather do instead.

These cards bring the grammar that makes those sentences possible, always inside a whole sentence: the perfect tense, the modal verbs, separable verbs, subordinate clauses with weil and dass, the two-way prepositions and the polite subjunctive.

The back gives the pronunciation in IPA, a usage note and a small word field. The notes name the traps: musst nicht is not must not, and halb acht is half past seven.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Everyday routines” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

You learn German. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.

What you learn

  • The perfect tense: haben or sein, and why
  • Modal verbs, and why musst nicht is not must not
  • Separable verbs and where the prefix ends up
  • Subordinate clauses with weil, dass, als and wenn
  • Two-way prepositions: an die Wand, an der Wand

The categories

10 categories sort the 165 cards. You can filter by category and take on what is due right now.

What you get

Here are three of the 165 cards you get when you buy the deck.

With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.

  1. Question

I get up at six every day.

    Answer

Ich stehe jeden Tag um sechs auf.

    Note

[ˈaʊ̯fʃteːən] · separable verb: the prefix goes to the end of the sentence · Word field: aufwachen (wake up), aufstehen (get up)

  2. Question

I wash myself in the morning.

    Answer

    Ich wasche mich morgens.

    Note

[ˈvaʃn̩] · reflexive verb: sich waschen, with the accusative pronoun · Word field: sich duschen (shower), sich anziehen (get dressed)

  3. Question

    She gets dressed quickly.

    Answer

    Sie zieht sich schnell an.

    Note

[ˈanˌtsiːən] · separable and reflexive at once: sich anziehen · Word field: ausziehen (take off), umziehen (change clothes, move house)

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 165 checked cards for €1.49, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.
