What is in this deck

With this deck you learn German at level B2: 133 cards with full sentences, plus pronunciation, a note on the form and two words from the same context.

At B2 the grammar is largely in place. What is missing is precision: the difference between a formal report and a message to a colleague, between conceding a point and giving it away, between an idiom that lands and one that misses.

These cards carry what German uses to make those distinctions: extended attributes, participles in front of nouns, connectors like sofern and geschweige denn, the modal particles that carry tone, and the idioms that only work in one shape.

Each back gives the pronunciation in IPA, the point behind the sentence and a small word field.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Working life” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

You learn German. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.

What you learn

  • Extended attributes and participles before nouns
  • Connectors: sofern, es sei denn, geschweige denn
  • Modal particles: doch, ja, eben, wohl, ruhig
  • Formal register: administration, law, research
  • Idioms that only work in one fixed shape

What you get

Here are three of the 133 cards you get when you buy the deck.

With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.

  1. Question

The report is being drawn up at the moment.

    Answer

    Der Bericht wird gerade erstellt.

    Note

[ɛɐ̯ˈʃtɛlt] · erstellen for documents; anfertigen is more formal still · Word field: verfassen (compose), Entwurf (draft)

  2. Question

The decision rests with the board.

    Answer

    Die Entscheidung liegt beim Vorstand.

    Note

[liːkt baɪ̯m] · liegen bei with the dative for responsibility · Word field: obliegen (be incumbent on), Zuständigkeit (competence)

  3. Question

We are dependent on the supplier.

    Answer

Wir sind auf den Lieferanten angewiesen.

    Note

[ˈanɡəviːzn̩] · angewiesen sein auf, with the accusative · Word field: Abhängigkeit (dependence), Engpass (bottleneck)

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 133 checked cards for €1.29, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.
