What is in this deck

With this deck you learn Spanish at level A1: 315 cards with full sentences, plus pronunciation, a note on the form and two words from the same context.

The beginning of a language is a few hundred words that keep coming back. These 315 cards are those words, in ten chapters ordered by what you need on the first day: greeting people, ordering food, asking the way, talking about your family.

Every card carries a whole sentence rather than a bare word, because a sentence brings the grammar with it: that gustar makes the thing the subject, that tener covers age and hunger, that hacer describes the weather.

On the back you find the pronunciation, the point where most learners stumble, and two neighbours from the same field.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Greetings and courtesy” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

You learn Spanish. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.

What you learn

  • The first 315 words, in sentences and not in lists
  • The sounds: ll, ñ, j and the Spanish z
  • ser and estar, tener and hacer in their fixed uses
  • Numbers, clock time and dates as you need them daily
  • Courtesy: por favor, perdón, ¿me puede ayudar?

The categories

10 categories sort the 315 cards. You can filter by category and take on what is due right now.

  1. Greetings and courtesy
  2. Food and drink
  3. Family and people
  4. At home
  5. Town and travel
  6. Body and health
  7. Time and numbers
  8. Free time
  9. School and work
  10. Weather and nature

What you get

Here are three of the 315 cards you get when you buy the deck.

With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.

  1. Question

    Good morning, how are you?

    Answer

    Buenos días, ¿cómo estás?

    Note

[ˈbwenos ˈdi.as] · until about noon; after that buenas tardes · Word field: buenas tardes (good afternoon), buenas noches (good night)

  2. Question

    Good afternoon, Mrs López.

    Answer

    Buenas tardes, señora López.

    Note

[ˈbwenas ˈtaɾðes] · from midday until dark · Word field: señora (Mrs), señor (Mr)

  3. Question

    Good night, see you tomorrow.

    Answer

    Buenas noches, hasta mañana.

    Note

[ˈbwenas ˈnotʃes] · also a greeting in the evening, not only a farewell · Word field: hasta mañana (until tomorrow), dormir (to sleep)

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 315 checked cards for €1.49, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.

Common questions

Do I have to pay for Qardbox?

Do I need a connection to study?

Only to download the deck. After that it lives on your device and you study offline. There is no account, and you sign in nowhere.
