What is in this deck

With this deck you learn the four subtests that decide enlistment eligibility: vocabulary, reading, arithmetic reasoning and mathematics.

Four subtests decide whether someone may enlist at all: word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, arithmetic reasoning and mathematics knowledge. Everything else decides which job.

178 cards on those four. A hundred words of the kind the test actually uses, each with the distinction that makes it worth knowing: infer against imply, credible against credulous, ingenious against ingenuous. Then the arithmetic, worked the way it has to be worked under time: per-unit first, percentages split into ten and five, and the shortcuts for the triangles that keep coming back.

The real test questions are confidential and none are here. The cards are written from the Department of Defense's own published guide, a work of the United States government, and from the mathematics itself, which belongs to nobody.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Arithmetic reasoning” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

What you learn

  • A hundred test words and the words they are confused with
  • Rates, ratios, percentages and mixtures under time pressure
  • Algebra to the level the test asks and no further
  • Geometry: areas, volumes and the triangles that recur
  • How a percentile score differs from a percentage

The categories

4 categories sort the 178 cards. You can filter by category and take on what is due right now.

  1. Arithmetic reasoning
  2. Mathematics knowledge
  3. Paragraph comprehension
  4. Word knowledge

Where the content comes from

The cards follow ASVAB Career Exploration Program, Technical and Study Materials, published by U.S. Department of Defense. As of Stand 2024.

What you get

Here are three of the 178 cards you get when you buy the deck.

  1. Question

    What does abate mean?

    Answer

    To lessen or die down.

    Note

A storm abates; so does a fever. The root is the same as in the word rebate.

  2. Question

    What does abhor mean?

    Answer

    To hate intensely.

    Note

Stronger than dislike and stronger than detest.

  3. Question

    What does abridge mean?

    Answer

To shorten while keeping the sense.

    Note

An abridged book keeps the story and loses the length.

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 178 checked cards for €1.49, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.

Do I need a connection to study?

Only to download the deck. After that it lives on your device and you study offline. There is no account, and you sign in nowhere.
