What is in this deck

With this deck you learn French at level C1: 192 cards with full sentences, plus pronunciation, a note on the form and two words from the same context.

C1 means you already speak freely. What is still missing are the fine differences between two words that mean the same in the dictionary and do not say the same in a sentence.

Roughly 190 cards on nuance, register and idiom. When a word is formal, when it is plain, when it is dated. What a native speaker would actually say at that point.

Plus a topic area about the language itself: expression, style, how to rephrase something. Eight areas from work to the arts. Every note explains the difference instead of merely asserting it.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Language and expression” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

You learn French. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.

What you learn

  • Around 190 expressions for nuance and idiom
  • Fine differences between close words
  • Language about language: expression and style
  • Eight fields from work to the arts
  • When a word is formal and when it is plain

What you get

Here are three of the 192 cards you get when you buy the deck.

With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.

  1. Question

This overly categorical judgement really ought to be qualified.

    Answer

Il faudrait nuancer ce jugement un peu trop catégorique.

    Note

[ny.ɑ̃.se] · neutral but written register · nuancer means to qualify or soften, not merely to shade. · Word field: nuancer (to qualify), la nuance (the nuance), nuancé (nuanced)

  2. Question

With that remark he meant to imply that the project had been poorly prepared.

    Answer

Par cette remarque, il voulait sous-entendre que le projet était mal préparé.

    Note

    [su.zɑ̃.tɑ̃dʁ] · sous-entendre que + ind. · Word field: sous-entendre (to imply), le sous-entendu (the innuendo), sous-entendu (implied)

  3. Question

That turn of phrase is correct, but it sounds very literary.

    Answer

Cette tournure est correcte, mais elle sonne très littéraire.

    Note

[tuʁ.nyʁ] · f · Word field: la tournure (the turn of phrase), tourner une phrase (to phrase a sentence), la tournure des événements (the turn of events)

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 192 checked cards for €1.99, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.
