What is in this deck
With this deck you learn German at level C2: 111 cards with full sentences, plus pronunciation, a note on the form and two words from the same context.
At C2 the grammar is settled and the choices begin. Two sentences can both be correct while only one of them says what you mean: sei or war, doch or eben, stur or beharrlich.
These cards gather what is left once the rules are learnt. Konjunktiv I in reported speech, the particles that carry a whole attitude in one syllable, the genitive verbs that survive in statutes, the proverbs with a history behind the picture, and the disputed cases every native speaker argues about.
On the back you find the pronunciation, the origin where it explains the phrase, and the neighbour the word is usually confused with.
The categories decide what comes up: start with “Konjunktiv and report” alone and add the rest when you are ready.
You learn German. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.
What you learn
- Konjunktiv I in reported speech: er sei, sie habe
- Particles that set the tone: doch, eben, wohl, bloß
- Elevated German: obliegen, gedenken, sich erfreuen
- Collocations: eine Entscheidung treffen, nicht machen
- The disputed cases: anscheinend, wegen, weder noch

What you get
Here are three of the 111 cards you get when you buy the deck.
With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.
Question
He said he was ill.
Answer
Er sagte, er sei krank.
Note
[zaɪ̯] · Konjunktiv I marks reported speech; the indicative would sound like your own claim · Word field: angeblich (allegedly), Indikativ (indicative)
Question
The paper reports she has resigned.
Answer
Die Zeitung meldet, sie habe ihr Amt niedergelegt.
Note
[ˈhaːbə] · habe, not hat: the reporter stays out of it · Word field: melden (report), niederlegen (lay down)
Question
Were I in your place, I would decline.
Answer
Wäre ich an Ihrer Stelle, würde ich ablehnen.
Note
[ˈvɛːʁə] · Konjunktiv II without wenn; the verb moves to the front · Word field: ablehnen (decline), an deiner Stelle (in your place)
Learning with Qardbox
You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.
What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.
Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.
What it costs, and what it doesn’t
Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.
Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.
It is a shortcut: 111 checked cards for €1.29, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.
