What is in this deck

With this deck you learn French team communication in police work: situation report and tasking, reading an order back, speaking up to a superior and the debrief.

Almost none of the French expressions a police team uses on the ground survives a word-for-word translation.

Reading an order back is collationnement, the first short message from the scene is a bilan d'ambiance, the running record of the patrol is the main courante, and the review afterwards is the retour d'expérience. Without those words you paraphrase, and on the radio that costs the precision the message was for.

Next to them stand the CRM terms as the French field carries them: conscience de la situation, erreur de fixation, gradient d'autorité. Each back gives the pronunciation and the origin, and the cards on COS, DOS and COD say who commands what.

What you get here is language and not a set of standing orders; the procedure itself remains what your service teaches.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Handover and situation report” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

You learn French. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.

What you learn

  • Collationnement: reading the order back
  • Message d'ambiance and point de situation
  • COS, DOS, COD: who commands what in France
  • Parlez, terminé, répétez on the radio
  • Main courante and retour d'expérience

The categories

8 categories sort the 140 cards. You can filter by category and take on what is due right now.

  1. Handover and situation report
  2. Command and mission
  3. Roles in the team
  4. Safeguards against error
  5. Situational awareness
  6. Radio discipline
  7. Scene and agencies
  8. Debriefing

What you get

Here are three of the 140 cards you get when you buy the deck.

With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.

  1. Question

    the situation report

    Answer

    le point de situation

    Note

[lə pwɛ̃ də sitɥasjɔ̃] · “faire le point” means to sum the situation up; the word also stands for the meeting itself · Word field: faire le point (to sum the situation up), le compte rendu (the report)

  2. Question

the four points: location, situation, resources, intent

    Answer

les quatre points : lieu, situation, moyens, intention

    Note

[le katʁ pwɛ̃] · four points in this order; whoever swaps them forces the other station to sort them · Word field: le lieu (the place), l'intention (what is to be achieved)

  3. Question

“SITREP to follow in five minutes.”

    Answer

« Point de situation dans cinq minutes. »

    Note

[dɑ̃ sɛ̃k minyt] · the announcement saves the command post from asking and takes the pressure off the person reporting · Word field: à suivre (still to come), le délai (the deadline)

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 140 checked cards for €1.29, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.
