What is in this deck

With this deck you learn German team communication in police work: situation report and tasking, reading an order back, speaking up to a superior and the debrief.

Working in a German police team means using words that no phrasebook spells out: Lagemeldung, Einsatzbefehl, Auftragstaktik.

The front of a card is English, the back carries the German expression with its pronunciation, a short note on where it comes from and two words from the same field. Alongside the service vocabulary stand the terms of Crew Resource Management as German training uses them: geschlossene Schleife, Zwei-Versuche-Regel, Situationsbewusstsein.

The radio has a section of its own, from the spelling table Anton, Berta, Cäsar to the procedure words Kommen and Ende, and a card says which of them the DV 810 actually lists.

Vocabulary is what the cards hold. How a callout is run stays a matter for your own service and its training.

The categories decide what comes up: start with “Handover and situation report” alone and add the rest when you are ready.

You learn German. The cards, the categories and the usage notes are in English, so you never have to learn through a third language.

What you learn

  • Lagemeldung: place, situation, units, intent
  • Einsatzbefehl and Auftragstaktik in plain terms
  • Anton, Berta, Cäsar: the German spelling table
  • Kommen, Ende, Verstanden: the words on the radio
  • Übergabe and Rückmeldung at the end of a shift

The categories

8 categories sort the 140 cards. You can filter by category and take on what is due right now.

  1. Handover and situation report
  2. Command and mission
  3. Roles in the team
  4. Safeguards against error
  5. Situational awareness
  6. Radio discipline
  7. Scene and agencies
  8. Debriefing

What you get

Here are three of the 140 cards you get when you buy the deck.

With foreign-language content the answers are read aloud as well, so you know how the words and sentences are pronounced.

  1. Question

    the situation report

    Answer

    die Lagemeldung

    Note

[ˈlaːɡəˌmɛldʊŋ] · it goes to the incident command and always carries the same points; on the radio it is announced beforehand · Word field: die Lage (how things stand right now), die Meldung (what is reported)

  2. Question

the four points: location, situation, resources, intent

    Answer

die vier Punkte: Ort, Lage, eigene Kräfte, Absicht

    Note

[fiːɐ̯ ˈpʊŋktə] · four points in this order; whoever swaps them forces the other station to sort them · Word field: der Ort (where something happens), die Absicht (what is to be achieved)

  3. Question

“SITREP to follow in five minutes.”

    Answer

    „Lagemeldung folgt in fünf Minuten.“

    Note

[fɔlkt] · the announcement saves the command post from asking and takes the pressure off the person reporting · Word field: die Ankündigung (saying it in advance), die Frist (by when something must be done)

Learning with Qardbox

You see a card, you think, you turn it over and say whether you knew it. A round asks nothing more of you, and how the app works out the next date from that is on the page about FSRS-6.

What sits comes back less often, what wobbles comes back soon. You set a daily goal, and when nothing is due the app tells you exactly that instead of inventing work for you. How a round goes is shown on the learning page.

Everything stays on your device. No account, no sign-up, no ads. After the purchase the deck sits in your library like any other subject and can be studied, reordered and extended just like your own.

What it costs, and what it doesn’t

Qardbox itself costs nothing, and it stays that way. Every function is there from the start, with no subscription, no ads and no tiers; what that rests on is on the page about what it costs.

Your own cards stay unlimited, and decks from friends or from the family you read in without a limit, from a file as well. You do not need this deck in order to learn with Qardbox.

It is a shortcut: 140 checked cards for €1.29, once, with Family Sharing. The work you would otherwise do is already done. The App Store shows the price in your currency.
